Born in Switzerland, Jung took a different path than his contemporaries. He believed that the human mind is not limited to daily problems or childhood experiences, but that there is a vaster, deeper world within us that includes creativity, the meaning of life, and our connection to history. With a deep and philosophical perspective, Jung transformed psychology from a purely medical treatment into a path for discovering one’s true self.

Jung’s theory, known as “Analytical Psychology,” focuses on the structure of the mind. He compared the human mind to an iceberg, with a small part above water (the conscious) and a massive portion beneath it (the unconscious). But the interesting part is that Jung introduced the concept of the “collective unconscious”; a part of the mind that is the shared memory of all humans. Within this collective unconscious exist patterns called “archetypes” which, like primal blueprints, shape our behaviors and feelings in various situations.

One of the most fascinating parts of Jung’s theories is the discussion of personality types. You have probably heard the terms “extrovert” and “introvert” often; it was Jung who first introduced these concepts. He explained how our mental energy is focused: whether it flows outward toward the world and people, or inward toward our own thoughts. However, he went further to say that neither is better than the other, and every human needs to cultivate both aspects within themselves to achieve balance.

The ultimate goal of Jung’s therapy and analysis was to reach what he called “individuation.” Simply put, individuation means letting go of repetitive and social roles to achieve wholeness. Jung believed that if we confront our hidden parts and our shadow, we not only find more peace but also unlock our true potential. He reminds us that life is not just about solving problems, but about finding meaning.

When discussing modern psychology, the name Carl Gustav Jung shines brightly among the greats of the field.
